Updates for accountants from HMRC, the profession and our community.
HMRC has paused checks that ask some advisers for their agent reference number (ARN) when contacting HMRC by phone or webchat. Checks resume from 18 November 2026 for businesses required to register.
From November 2026, employers can register to voluntarily payroll non-mandated benefits for 2027–28. From 6 April 2027, voluntary payrollers must also pay Class 1A National Insurance through payroll.
From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits will count towards a person's estate for Inheritance Tax, under the Finance Act 2026. HMRC has published technical notes ahead of updated guidance.
HMRC is encouraging Self Assessment customers to file their 2025–26 returns early. The online filing and payment deadline is 31 January 2027; paper returns are due by 31 October 2026.
The second quarterly update for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is due on 7 November 2026. The Agent Dedicated Line will be closed that day; agents can use the Self Assessment helpline (9am to 3pm) or webchat (8am to 4pm). HMRC is also signing up sole traders and landlords who should be using MTD for 2026–27.
From late September 2026, HMRC is issuing P800 calculations or Simple Assessment (PA302) notices for tax owed on interest earned in 2025–26. If you receive more than one notice, deduct what you have already paid.
